Heavy branches from a mature tree broke and partly blocked Rabat's Saqqajja Hill on Wednesday morning.

No damage appears to have been caused to passing vehicles and nobody was injured.

The incident happened at about 10am at the top of Saqajja Hill. According to unconfirmed reports, the tree was hit by a large truck which dragged the branches down.

Traffic was diverted until fire fighters from the Civil Protection Department removed the branches.

In December, cars were damaged when two trees toppled over in strong winds in Valley Road, Birkirkara.

And in February a driver was killed and his wife was critically injured after their vehicle was hit by a falling tree in Mrieħel.

In April two tourists sitting on the upper deck of a double-decker bus died when the bus hit a low tree branch near Żurrieq.
