In the run-up to Easter it is customary to prepare ourselves spiritually by visiting some of our numerous churches and shrines. Besides the spiritual aspect one cannot neglect the amazing works of art and historical artefacts which our churches contain.

The lovely city of Vittoriosa is possibly one of the best examples. Nevertheless I must point out the pitiful state in which many historical and art pieces are displayed in the small church museum right behind the church of St Lawrence. Among these are the hat and sword of Grand Master La Vallette, a large silver icon of Our Lady which was brought to Malta from Rhodes by the Order of St John and a small painting of St Jerome by Mattia Preti.

It is how we present and conserve such artefacts which indicates the value we attribute to our national treasures.
