Operators of transport services including passenger coach operators, cargo haulers, food distributors, mini-bus owners,trailer operators, gas distributors and waste-carriers today discussed problems caused to them by rising fuel prices and decided to request an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister, the GRTU said.

The chamber said the rise in the cost of diesel was having an extremely negative impact on the profitability of such businesses. It pointed out that most of them could not raise their prices because they are under fixed contracts.

GRTU Director General, Vince Farrugia, who chaired the meeting, explained that transporters agreed that prior to any action they may wish to take as part of the European Professional Transporters Campaign to cause EU governments to reduce taxes on diesel, the operators would do their utmost to meet the Prime Minister in the next few days in an effort to find a just and achievable solution.
