Transport Malta is helping the crew of a Maltese-registered ship after they made pleas for help, saying they had been abandoned by the ship owners.

The ship, MV Nicea, which is berthed alongside the Red China Dock, yesterday displayed banners calling for help.

Transport Malta said it was providing essential services and supplies to the vessel and crew.

The MV Nicea (6894 gross tons) entered Maltese territorial waters for bunkering on March 5. That same day, following an application by one of its creditors, the Maltese courts issued a warrant of arrest against the ship.

After the ship owners were informed of the warrant, all contact with them was lost, Transport Malta said.

Transport Malta said it was continuing to follow developments.
