Transport Malta architect Gordon Zammit, who was allegedly the mastermind of a fraudulent scheme involving road works, was today placed under house arrest.

A court granted him bail but restricted him to house arrest against a deposit of €3,000 and a personal guarantee of €20,000.

The request for bail was made by defence counsel Michael Schriha.

The prosecution claimed earlier this week that Mr Zammit pocketed some €93,000 in the scheme where invoices for road works were inflated by a total of €500,000. The remainder, after deduction of taxes, were allegedly kept by road works contractor Alfred Schembri and Sons Ltd.

Company director George Oliver Schembri and his accounts clerk Donald Camilleri stand accused of involvement in the scheme.

Earlier this week it was revealed in parliament that 86 road works contracts were awarded to the company over the years, including eight, worth €194,682, which were awarded by direct order.

The accused are pleading not guilty.
