The Transport Ministry said this afternoon that no threat of strike action would stop the government from going ahead with public transport reform.

Reacting to a statement this morning by the Transport Federation with regards to the reform of the taxi sector, the ministry said the public consultation process was open, and the people should feel free to express their views without being conditioned by threats from the federation.

The federation's statement was in sharp contrast to that of the White Taxis Association, which made no threats and said it was ready for further talks, the ministry observed.

It said it would honour its commitment to consult all interested parties and it was therefore no violating any commitment made when the transport strike ended, the ministry said.

It urged the the federation itself to come up with reform suggestions, because the people quite clearly were eager for reform. The attitude of a section of the federation was in itself, confirmation of the need for lliberalisation of the transport sector, the ministry concluded.
