A clerk at the Malta Transport Authority (now Transport Malta) was today handed a six month jail term suspended for 18 months after he was found guilty of having on two or three occasions, received Lm2 (€4.66) to allow an applicant for a driving licence to jump the queue. The court also imposed a general perpetual interdiction.

Th court established that the accused had on two or three ocasions received a tip of Lm2 (€4.66) from a Stephen Mallia in order to process his documents before others.

The court said there was no evidence that the accused ever asked for money, but the money was handed to him.

Although the amounts were small, this was still considered as being a bribe rather than a compliment. The accused had accepted money when he was not due any money for his services, beyond what he was lawfully paid.

The court said it had considered that the money involved was very small and the accused had no previous convictions.
