Traffic chaos in the central part of Malta continued into the evening after a trailer overturned in Aldo Moro Road in Marsa in mid-afternoon.

The busy road was closed to traffic as a crane was set up to remove the trailer and its fully loaded container.

The traffic tailback stretched all the way back to Mater Dei Hospital in Tal-Qroqq, Pieta' Seafront, Portes de Bombes, Blata l-Bajda, Qormi and Zebbug, recalling the day when a section of Aldo Moro road was closed when a crane hit the pedestrian bridge.

Some drivers reported being stuck in traffic for well over two hours.

The trailer, carrying a 40-foot container, overturned at about 3 p.m. in a section of road past the bend, opposite the former Malta Shipbuilding. It came to rest on the pavement.

The road was only closed when preparations started being made to lift it.

The driver, a 44-year-old from Pieta, was trapped and rescuers from the Civil Protection Department had to use cutting equipment to free him and take him to hospital. His medical condition was described as serious.
