The number of traffic accidents between July and September decreased by 413 when compared to the same months last year, to reach 3,798, but the roads saw six fatalities compared to four in the same months last year. There were also 328 other casualties.

The NSO said 192 drivers were injured, including three who died and 38 who were grievously hurt.

Also injured were 75 passengers and 30 pedestrians. A passenger and two pedestrians were killed.

The largest number of casualties was in the 25-39 age group. Nearly half of all traffic casualties occurred during weekends.

Birkirkara was the locality with the highest rate of traffic accidents, with 208 cases. Qormi and San Pawl il-Bahar came close, with 204 and 202 reported accidents respectively.
