A French tourist appeared in court yesterday charged with having 40 grams of cannabis when he was run over in Gżira last week, fracturing his knee.

Alexis Medhy Robin Meyret, 25, who lives in Gżira, denied being in possession of the drug in circumstances denoting it was not for his personal use.

The court heard he was crossing the road when he was hit by a car. An ambulance arrived on site and rushed him to hospital. During police investigations it was noted that he was carrying a plastic bag which, among other items, contained cannabis.

He appeared before Magistrate Marseann Farrugia on crutches and with both legs heavily bandaged.

He was granted bail against a deposit of €2,500 and a €10,000 personal guarantee.

Police Inspector Jonathan Ransley prosecuted.

Lawyer Mario de Marco was defence counsel.
