The French tourist who was hit by a car in Gżira last week, sustaining a fractured knee, ended up in court on crutches charged with having 40 grams of cannabis at the time of the accident.

Alexis Medhy Robin Meyret, a 25-year-old Frenchman who lives in Gżira denied possession of the drug found in circumstances denoting it was not for his personal use.

The court heard how the man was crossing the street when he was hit by a car.

An ambulance arrived on site and rushed him to hospital to received treatment for a fractured leg but while the police were investigating, they found a plastic bag that the man had been carrying. Inside it, among other items, they found the cannabis.

He appeared before Magistrate Marseann Farrugia on crutches and with both legs heavily bandaged.

He was granted bail against a deposit of €2,500 and a €10,000 personal guarantee.

Police Inspector Jonathan Ransley prosecuted while lawyer Mario de Marco appeared for the man.
