A triangular tournament, Gowl għall-Istrina, will be played at the Luxol Stadium on Monday with all proceeds from the event going towards the annual fund-raising campaign, L-Istrina.

The producers of Replay, NET TV's weekly football show, are organising the tournament with the participation of three teams.

One team will be composed of Premier League and national team coaches, another comprises former international players and the third side in the tournament will be selected from among members of the Malta Football Referees Association.

The event, under the auspices of President George Abela, will start at 7.30 pm.

During a press conference at TeamSport yesterday, executive producer George Micallef said the event will bring together most partners involved in local football to help raise much-needed funds in aid of the needy.

All three matches will be of 30 minutes' duration and penalties will decide the issue in case of a draw.

What makes this initiative even more special is the fact that participants will raise money themselves through individual sponsors, Micallef said.

There will be no entrance fee at the gates on Monday but those present can also contribute with donations. The organisers hope that businesses will play their part as well to maximise the sum collected by donating €30 for each goal scored during the tournament.

Marica Mizzi, Head Communications at the Office of the President, yesterday thanked the organisers for the initiative. She encouraged the sporting public to attend and help raise more money for charity.

"On Monday, the President will be at the Luxol Stadium to meet the participants and kick off the tournament," she said.

Former national team coaches, Pippo Psaila and Gentscho Dobrev, will lead the retired national team players' side.

Robert Gatt, ex-Hibernians mentor, will be joined by former Sliema Wanderers coach, now NET TV pundit, Hugh Caruana, at the helm of the coaches team.

The list of former international players in the tournament includes John Buttigieg, Carmel Busuttil, David Carabott, Martin Gregory, Michael Degiorgio, Ray Vella, Joe Brincat, Reggie Cini, Stefan Sultana, John Holland and Ernest Barry.

All Premier League coaches have accepted the organisers' invitation to take part.
