Tourists spent €130 million more in 2015 than the previous year, Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said yesterday.

Speaking during his visit to a number of hotels across the island, Dr Zammit Lewis said figures from the end of November and the same 11 months last year showed “significantly increased spending”. Dr Zammit Lewis also referred to figures published yesterday by the National Statistics Office.

The statistics showed record tourist numbers for the month of November, normally considered to be a “sluggish” shoulder month.

Total tourist expenditure last month was estimated at €90.1 million, an increase of 12.2 per cent over the same month last year.

Arrivals from EU states went up by nearly 10 per cent to 95,835. And, the total number of nights spent by tourists on the island went up by 7.7 per cent, or 839,000 nights.

Some 92,188 came on holiday, 13,025 on business.
