Karl Flores (‘Food for thought’, March 23) asks why are so many pizzerias mushrooming across the Maltese islands. He says the answer is simple. I think the only veritable answer to his question is that the “record number” of tourists that hop over to Malta on a cheap flight, hire a flat together with about five or six others and do not dare approach a restaurant for a steak. The type of tourists we are getting simply cannot afford a good meal while on ‘holiday’ in Malta. That is why pizzerias are mushrooming.

To remain on the subject of tourists, Philip Agius (‘Barrakka monuments’, March 28) had a very sensible suggestion regarding monuments. May I add my own suggestion too?

Tourist should be told what the knot monument at Castille Place in Valletta is all about. I am sure they will not believe what is being said that this “monument” was similar to the Patrick Dalli painting purchased by the government.
