The Malta Tourism Authority will be investing nearly €800,000 in online marketing and advertising in an attempt to boost Malta's exposure on the internet, Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco said.

The money will be used to set up banners and specialised listings in search engines promoting Malta.

The initiative, which will fall under the authority, will include offers with hotels, tour operators and airlines, he added.

Online marketing and bookings were crucial to the sector and highlighted how the internet had revolutionised the sector, Dr de Marco said during a visit to Hotel Juliani.

The hotel in St Julians was awarded the prestigious Select Insider Award by one of the largest online booking engines in the world, Expedia. Around 85,000 hotels are registered with Expedia and five Maltese hotels have made it to the insider list, which features top hotels for value and quality. Just one per cent (850) of the website's listed hotels make the grade.
