Thousand of candles and fjakkoli were used to light up Siggiewi square and part of the street opposite St Sebastian parish church in Qormi yesterday as the faithful marked Maundy Thursday with the traditional prayers in seven churches in remembrance of the Passion and death of the Lord.

Meanwhile, some 10,000 young and not so young people also took part in a pilgrimage walk from Mellieha Church to Senglea - linking the two churches of Our Lady. The walk took some four-and-half hours with the participants packing Senglea gate as they arrived at the crack of dawn to applause and enthusiasm. They raised funds for Puttinu Cares - an effort which will continue later today with a special collection during Xarabank.

In Qormi, the St Sebastian youths used more than 5,000 candles to form a huge image of an episode from the passion of the Lord (See picture below by Joseph Savona - an idea of the size is given by the people around it.).

In nearby Siggiewi, the parish church parvis and the square were lit with hundreds of fjakkoli torches. The event was organised by St Nicholas Band Club with the assistance of the local council. The route to Is-Salib ta' l-gholja was also lit up with torches.
