San Ġwann: J. Spiteri, K. Fabri, C. Giordemaina, R. Forace, R. Zammit, A. Gatt, A. Borg, C. Gatt, A. Zahra, S. Hili (S. Zammit Fava), R. Brincat.

Referee: Sammy Attard.

An Antoine Zahra goal was enough for San Ġwann to beat Lija and secure three very important points in their bid to win promotion with only one more match to go.

San Ġwann did the early attacking and after going close through Roberto Brincat, Sergio Hili and Clint Gatt it was Lija who hit back strongly but goalkeeper Justin Spiteri did well to stop Lydon Cilia from opening the score. San Ġwann broke the deadlock on 28 minutes through Zahra following some good work on the right flank by Ryan Zammit.

A minute into the second half Lija went close through Allen Medati and in the 50th minute an Andre Scicluna grounder was stopped by Spiteri.

San Ġwann wasted a clear opportunity through Hili and later on Brincat hit just high over the bar following a good move by Gatt.

In the 83rd minute, San Ġwann could have sealed the issue but Keith Fabri's header was blocked on the Lija goal line.

Melita 5
Mġarr United 0

Melita: M. Sapiano (J.P. Debattista), M. Mamo, M. Ellul, G. Gribbon, D. Gravino, M. Hyzler (L. Micallef), M. Borg II, J. Galea, S. Galea, G. Degabriele, K. Micallef.

Referee: Joe Attard.

Melita outclassed Mġarr in a one-sided match that was practically decided after just 21 minutes when the score was already 3-0 as the Amateurs kept their promotion chances alive.

The Amateurs opened the score in the 10th minute through Julian Galea and five minutes later Kane Micallef was on the right spot to finish off a good move by Mark Hyzler to make it 2-0.

Malcolm Mamo made it 3-0 with a calibrated cross-shot as Mġarr were never allowed any chance to settle down. They had shots at the Melita goal near the end of the opening half but Sapiano was alert to stop the efforts of Chris Abela and Jonathan Ebejer.

However, six minutes before the break the match was as good as over as Melita added a fourth goal through Gregory Degabriele.

The second period was a mere formality. Melita eased the pressure and on 65 minutes Kane Micallef was sent off for a second caution.

Despite the handicap, the Amateurs still managed to increase their lead ten minutes later thanks to an excellent Luke Micallef goal.

Balzan Youths 5
Sta Venera 0

Balzan: B. Bonello, D. Agius, S. Cappitta, R. Mifsud, J. Agius (B. Pace), A. Lagana (L. McKay), R. Farrugia, A. Agius, I. Bilocca, K. Coleiro, A. Camilleri (D. Mamo).

Referee: Andrea Sciriha.

Balzan Youths dominated this match as the scoreline clearly shows. Division Two leading scorer Kurt Coleiro scored a hat-trick as Balzan are now joint leaders with San Ġwann on 44 points, three points ahead of Rabat Ajax who have a game in hand.

Balzan dominated the first period and after going close through Kurt Coleiro, they surged ahead in the 14th minute through Alistair Camilleri. Five minutes later they doubled their lead as a cross by Ives Bilocca was finished off by Coleiro.

Balzan insisted in attack and were again close through Coleiro and Ives Bilocca with Sta Venera having a penalty in favour in the 42nd minute for a foul by Anthony Lagana on substitute Ian Falzon. However, Falzon's kick from the spot was saved by keeper Brian Bonello.

In the initial stages of the second half, Sta Venera could have pulled a goal back but were hesitant in front of goal. Then, 20 minutes from time, Coleiro scored Balzan's third goal and Aaron Agius added another on 75 minutes following a personal effort.

Coleiro notched his hat-trick late on to round up Balzan's fine day.

(abandoned 69th minute)

St Andrew's: F. Tabone, N. Chetcuti, N. Gatt Coleiro, J. Briscoe White, S. Falzon, A. Galea, E. Hili (A. Galea), A. Camilleri Kamsky, A. Busuttil, M. Valenzia (M. Calleja), J. Gatt Coleiro.

Referee: Chris Francalanza.

This relegation clash was abandoned in the 69th minute when referee Chris Francalanza was punched by Żurrieq player Joe Lia who had just been shown the red card.

At that stage the Saints were beating Żurrieq with veteran Alex Busuttil scoring two of their goals.

After six minutes the Saints went close through a Michael Valenzia free-kick with Żurrieq having a Matthew Genuis drive saved by Tabone.

Żurrieq gained the upperhand in midfield but could not find a way through. Daniel Zammit hit wide from the edge of the penalty area and shots by Godfrey Chetcuti and Genuis were saved by Tabone.

The patient Saints took the lead a minute before the break when Jeremy Gatt Coleiro scored from a Neil Chetcuti centre.

However, nine minutes into the second half the Reds equalised from a penalty, awarded for a foul on Zammit and converted by Chetcuti.

Three minutes later St Andrew's regained the lead through Busuttil and in the 67th minute Busuttil headed in a Michael Calleja cross to make it 3-1.

However, two minutes later the match came to an abrupt end.

Żurrieq defender Lia retaliated badly for a red card and hit the referee on his way out. The referee fell to the ground and had to be assisted. The match was abandoned.
