Top public appointments, such as judges and authority board members, should require parliamentary public scrutiny to ensure that nominees are selected on the basis of merit, AD chairman Michael Briguglio said.

Addressing a news conference in Msida, he said that AD in Parliament would ensure that meritocracy in the public sector was mainstreamed.

“Those selected should be experienced and qualified, and their loyalty should be towards legislation and policies, and not towards the partisan whims of a minister.”

AD deputy chairman Carmel Cacopardo said members of the judiciary should be nominated by the President subject to confirmation by Parliament and public authority board members as well as senior officials of such authorities should be scrutinised by Parliament directly or through its committees.

This should be done to ascertain that persons nominated can truly serve the country and not the political interests of the political party in government.
