How right Lawrence V. Cachia is in his Talking Point titled Creating Safer Building Sites (January 8).

The new year had barely started when it claimed the life of a 39-year-old construction worker. Then, on January 8, it was reported that a 23-year-old was in a critical condition. Accidents seem to be on the increase. Even just one is too many.

I have in mind a construction site in Naxxar. To be exact in Jean de la Valette Street. A corner villa with front garden was pulled down to make way for flats etc. A very common sight indeed these days! What worried me most on January 6 was that a huge crane with a number of larger-than-usual stones was left hovering on the road over the weekend. The street in question is a busy residential one.

God forbid that something should happen to the crane - such as a broken arm or a loose stone.

It is exposing innocent passers-by, residents and parked cars to continuous danger.

Why does the contractor allow that to happen? Is it possible that no police, warden or members of the local council ever pass by?

It is a shame that in this country of ours, action is taken only after a nasty accident happens! Life lost is never regained.
