Good morning. These are the leading stories in this Friday’s local newspapers.
A photo of a car being towed following flooding Thursday’s massive downpour dominates the Times of Malta front page, with the newspaper leading with news of the ECJ’s ruling that finch trapping must end. Prominence is also given to the President of Malta saying she signed IVF amendments into law “solely out of loyalty to the Constitution”.
The Malta Independent front page picks up the same themes, splashing with a photo of flooding in Mrieħel, a main story about the European Court’s ruling in finch trapping and a secondary story concerning the President’s IVF warning.
In-Nazzjon tackle those two stories but with a different slant, writing that the President was “constrained” to sign the IVF amendments and that trappers would now be forbidden from practicing their hobby due to bad decisions by the government.
L-Orizzont quotes Paola’s mayor and the architect responsible for the redesign of the town’s main square as urging people to “give trees a chance to grow”. Critics have slammed planners for uprooting several mature trees in the square, replacing them with saplings.
