It was high time to make amendments to the Constitution, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this morning.

The process of Constitutional Convention will start in the coming months and is intended to get the views of civil society. Such a discussion should not be driven by politicians but by the people, he said.

Last weekend, Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil expressed reservations to the Constitutional Convention.

Speaking during a ceremony in front of the Republic Day monument in Marsa this morning, the Prime Minister said the republic constitution gave Malta dignity, the Prime Minister said, giving the country its first head of state. The event in 1974 followed Independence in 1964 and it was therefore important not to pit one feast against the other, the Prime Minister appealed.
