Lawmakers yesterday defeated three Opposition motions to amend two legal notices and revoke another one, by 27 votes in favour and 33 against.

The first vote was taken on the motion to amend the legal notice which provides, among other things, that the Minister of Education may issue university licences “in the national interest”.

The motion was moved by Nationalist MP George Pullicino and seconded by Opposition leader Simon Busuttil.

The other motion, moved by Mario de Marco and Mr Pullicino, sought to amend a legal notice which provides for the establishment of the Institute of Education.

The last motion – moved by Dr de Marco, David Agius and Jason Azzopardi – called for the revocation of the legal notice setting up an agency for a system of local enforcement.

By a similar margin, the House then approved the second readings of three Bills in connection with the Mepa demerger: the Development Planning Bill, the Environment Protection Bill and the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal Bill.
