The Italian mafia boss, wanted in Italy to serve time for murder, has been jailed for three months after he was found guilty of possessing a falsified identity card.

Sebastiano Brunno, who the court heard used the non de plum Natale La Modica, had an ID card bearing his photo but with different details. He admitted ordering the false identity card and signing it as Natale La Modica.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke found Mr Brunno, 56, guilty and jailed him for three months. She ruled that even though he had not falsified the ID himself, an accomplice got the same punishment as the actor or instigator of a crime.

Mr Brunno was arrested in Buġibba on October 2, five years after the Sicilian police mounted an extensive manhunt for him. He is known as the head of the Nardo Cosca, a branch of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra.

Police Inspector Mario Cuschieri prosecuted.
