Three Nigerian men who tried to leave the island using false Spanish residency cards and passports were yesterday each jailed for six months.

Greg Agharia, 18, Sunday Igbinakhase, 26, and Osas Aigi, 19, were caught at the airport on Thursday morning trying to board a flight to Rome. They pleaded guilty before Magistrate Edwina Grima to being in possession of and trying to use the counterfeit documents.

Legal aid lawyer Adrian Camilleri asked the court to take into consideration the fact that they had clean police records and had cooperated with the police.

Police Inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi said in his opinion punishment should be somewhere near the minimum prescribed by law, acknowledging that they had, in fact, cooperated during investigations.
