Three Britons were charged with drug trafficking yesterday following a raid on a hotel room in Buġibba on Wednesday.

Jamie Thomas Carter, 30, and Daniel Emile Degisi, 24, who were staying at the Primera Hotel, where the raid took place, pleaded not guilty to being in possession of 220 grammes of cocaine.

Mark Andrew Buckley, 25, who was at the Qawra Inn, was arraigned separately but on the same charge.

The three men also denied the charges of conspiring to importing and trafficking in the drug.

The police said Mr Buckley tried to leave Malta on a ferry to Sicily after realising that the drugs had been seized by the police.

Taking into consideration the fact that the accused had no ties with the island, Magistrate Audrey Demicoli remanded them in custody.
