An ancient Thracian gold mask and (right) a gold-plated cup, dating from the 5th century BC, is shown at the Thrace and the Ancient World exhibition of a private collection at the National Museum of History in Sofia, Bulgaria. The Thracian civilisation appeared roughly around the end of the 5th century BC and the beginning of the 4th millennium BC. Thrace was a unifying name for the people living on the territory of modern-day Bulgaria, northern Greece, western Turkey, Romania, Moldova, southern Ukraine, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Serbia.
