Thousands of revellers celebrated the New Year in Valletta tonight, packing St George's Square as the countdown to 2014 was projected onto the historic walls of the Presidential Palace.

Heavy rainfall in the evening undoubtedly discouraged many from going to Valletta, but those who did were not disappointed as the rain held off and they could join in the merriment provided by a host of entertainers on the main stage.

Fireworks were let off at the stroke of midnight, with some people popping 'champagne' bottles they brought along with them.

Entertainment was also laid on in other parts of the City, giving it the appearance of Notte Bianca.
