Thousands visited the Palumbo Shipyards in Cottonera during an open day to mark the 6th anniversary since Antonio Palumbo opened shop in Malta.

Mr Palumbo’s aim was to expand his business portfolio by exploring the great investment potential that Malta offers in the maritime sector.

Through his long term vision and determination, he managed to overcome the rather tough initial challenges and ensured that the renewed organisational and infrastructural set-up at Palumbo Shipyards would meet the highest standards demanded by a highly competitive ship repair market, the yard said.

To mark the occasion, Mr Palumbo, together with his management team and employees, opened the shipyards to the public to witness the progress that has been achieved so far.

Visitors were able to get a glimpse of the heavy plant, machinery and equipment used in this specialised trade. Most of the workshops were opened and accessible to visitors. An attractive spot was the Mechanical Museum where old machinery and ship repair tools were on display.

Those who attended were also given the opportunity to explore various parts of the yard through a series of guided train rides. Animators and musicians from Cottonera band clubs provided entertainment to those present, including various events and activities for children.

The day came to an end with a musical concert by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra with the participation of Joseph Calleja, Ira Losco and Allison Ellul and a mini concert by Calleja and pianist Charlene Farrugia.

Mr Calleja brought the curtain down with Nessun Dorma and a fireworks display in the background.

Mr Palumbo, owner and of the shipyard said that the company was striving to improve Malta’s reputation in this sector.
