Thousands of people have been evacuated after explosions at an army ammunition store in south-west Russia. 

Russia's Emergency Ministry said there were initially four explosions at the base in Chapayevsk late yesterday.

It said the explosions were caused by a fire.  

The ministry said about 11 million pieces of ammunition were stored at the site.

It said 30 people have sought medical help...four of them needed hospital treatment.

About 6, 000 people were evacuated from the area in the south-western Samara region.
