The choice of President, the Għadira bypass, the St John's church project, the breakwater bridge, the opera house...and any other project for that matter. Do you see any connection between any of these controversial projects and evolution? Personally I think that there is a very strong connection, in fact. Let me explain myself and then you'll have to agree with me. But no. You cannot agree with me because if you do, you'll be proving my theory wrong.

Some 600 years ago a certain Aesop recounted the following fable: A miller and his son drove their donkey to the fair. A group of girls looked at them and said: "Look what fools, trudging the road on foot when they can be riding!"

So the father put his son on the donkey. Soon they came to a group of old men. "There," said one of them angrily, "an idle rogue riding and his old father has to walk."

So father and son changed places. They soon met some women. "Shame on you lazybones," cried one of them. "How can you ride and let your poor boy walk?" So father took up his son behind him.

But as soon as they reached the edge of the village, they met a townsman who called out to them: "I think I'll report you to the authorities for your cruelty to animals. It would be better if you carry the donkey." Father and son obliged. This was such an entertaining sight that caused such an uproar among the spectators that the donkey was frightened, slipped off the pole and fell into the river.

That was the reaction of the people thousands of years ago. Let's come to the present day. When the Nationalist government chose a President from its own camp, the opposition and its supporters cried "Shame". A few weeks ago Lawrence Gonzi chose one from the Labour camp. The result? Several Labour supporters once again cried "Shame".
