The roaring dinosaurs are back in the fifth instalment of the sci-fi film franchise which began 25 years ago.

The sequel to 2015’s Jurassic World sees actors Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard reprising their roles as Owen and Claire, who return to Isla Nublar, off Central America’s Pacific coast, three years after its dinosaur theme park was devastated by the creatures escaping confinement. With a volcanic eruption threatening the surviving dinosaurs, the two race against time to rescue them.

Also in the cast is Jeff Goldblum, who returns as Dr Ian Malcolm, an expert in chaos theory, and James Cromwell as Sir Benjamin Lockwood, who works in the development of technology to clone dinosaurs.

The film, directed by J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) and produced by Steven Spielberg,  premiered in Madrid, Spain, on May 21, and is scheduled to be released in the UK  and Malta today. It will only be released in the US on June 22 and no critic reviews were available until the time of print. However, irrespective of criticism and box office takings, an untitled sequel is set to be released on June 11, 2021.

In this romantic comedy, the lives of four lifelong friends – played by Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen –  are turned upside down after reading the infamous 50 Shades of Grey, catapulting them into a series of outrageous life choices.

The film received mixed reviews.

Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post said the film “has brio, rueful humour and celebratory verve that is nearly impossible to resist”.

The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, however, reads: “Book Club only intermittently rises to the level of its impressive veteran cast; fortunately, they're more than enough to bring pedestrian material entertainingly to life.”

The film has so far grossed $47.5 million in US box office takings.
