The third lane in the northbound carriageway of Aldo Moro Street, Marsa, will be temporarily closed this evening because of repair works on the footbridge, Transport Malta said.

The bridge was hit and slightly damaged by an excavator which was being transported on a trailer in April, causing traffic chaos for several hours.

In May, Transport Malta filed a judicial protest calling on the owner and the driver of a trailer to foot the bill for the repair work.

In the protest, Transport Malta called on 60-year-old Carmel Spiteri, the owner, and the driver, also a Carmel Spiteri, aged 56 to pay for the damages.

Transport Malta said the driver caused the incident due to negligence and in breach of driving regulations. The owner was also responsible, it said, because the vehicle was not licensed or insured. The licence had expired in August 2006.
