Genoa fell to their third defeat in a row, dropping their first points at home in 2012 as they were edged out by Chievo.

Cyril Thereau scored the winner in the 30th minute to lift the Flying Donkeys away from danger and level on points with their hosts, whose coach Pasquale Marino's job is now hanging in the balance.

The visitors played a disciplined game, deserving their win against a Genoa side who lacked any clear identity as they lost their 12th game of the season.

Genoa had won their last three home games by the same 3-2 scoreline with the fans getting used to goals at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

However, Chievo had clearly done their homework and frustrated the home side with a strong defensive display.

Domenico Di Carlo's side were not in any way negative, though, as they waited patiently for a chance to break and they even created the best chances of the first half with Thereau missing a free-header in the 24th minute.

Six minutes later, he was once again left totally alone in the penalty area and this time he made no mistake, side-footing the ball into the bottom corner after being found by Sergio Pellissier eight yards out.

Sebastien Frey was tested again in the 37th minute when he pushed Cruzado's 30-yard effort over the crossbar.

Stefano Sorrentino was largely a spectator at the other end of the field, but he was alert to turn a header from Giuseppe Sculli round the post in the 43rd minute.

The Chievo goalkeeper excelled himself in the 58th minute when he pushed Bosko Jankovic's shot wide with one hand.

Genoa committed men forwards in their search for an equaliser, but they were lucky not to concede another when Frey thwarted Vacek with a fine save in the 84th minute.
