Two hooded men, one of them brandishing a shotgun, broke into the Cerviola Hotel in Marsascala early yesterday morning and stole about €3,000 after firing a shot at the cash register.
The police said that two men drove up to the hotel in Triq il-Qalliet at about 4.30 a.m. and tried to enter but found a locked door. The thieves broke the bottom part of the glass door and made their way inside.
They ordered the receptionist to hand over the keys to the cash register, which was locked. However, since he did not have them, one of the two intruders fired a shot at the cash register's lock and they then took about €3,000 in cash.
No one was hurt in the incident.
Duty Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna has launched an inquiry with the assistance of a number of court experts.
