A man serving a six-year sentence has been jailed for an additional four years after being found guilty of theft in 2010.

In his judgment, Magistrate Joe Mifsud said that Massimo Caruso was fully aware of what he was doing when he stole €17,000 worth of jewellery and €600 in cash from a San Ġwann residence.

When faced with forensic evidence, the accused opted not to explain how his fingerprints had been found at the scene of the crime.

In the pre-sentencing report, it was noted that he showed no remorse for the crime. Rather, he expressed anger at the victim for – in his view – amplifying it. He justified his behaviour by referring to his drug abuse problem.

On the other hand, the victim had suffered serious trauma and had to move house. Since the victim had no insurance, she did not receive any compensation.

Magistrate Mifsud recommended that Mr Caruso should be assisted to overcome his drug problem and said that he should be allowed to carry out community work.
