One of the most scenic spots in Gozo - Wied il-Mielah, continues to be marred by sewage overflows, especially after heavy rain.

The picture above, taken by John Michael Mizzi, shows disgusted tourists in the valley late last week. Mr Mizzi said sewage was overflowing just 100 metres from the picturesque Wied il-Mielah stone arch, which is similar to the one in Dwejra.

"Tourists ask me why sewage is being allowed to flow on the valley floor. It is always an embarrassing question," Mr Mizzi said. "It is bad enough that sewage is flowing to the sea but it is very deplorable that sewage is also flowing on the valley floor when the valley is frequented by many local and foreign ramblers."

He said the stench during some days last week was unbearable.

Gharb local council said earlier this month that it had been granted €570,000 under EU cohesion funds to rehabilitate and improve accessibility to Wied Il-Mielah.
