Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna is dedicating a day to The Sword at Fort Rinella on Sunday with hands-on sessions aimed at involving public participation and live demonstrations in sword fighting.

The day-long exhibition, showing a large variety of swords from different periods and cultures, will also include a Royal Armouries documentary on civilian swords and swordsmanship in Europe between 1500 and 1800. The live demonstrations in sword fighting illustrate how different swords were used.

FWA said that for many centuries, the sword was the most personal weapon, the most prestigious, and the most versatile for close combat, but it came to decline in military use as technology changed warfare. Currently, it maintains a key role in court and military ceremonial.

Those visiting Fort Rinella on Sunday will have the opportunity to learn how a sword is made and how it is used. They will also view a vast collection of original and replica swords covering some two millennia of sword evolution. A qualified sword master will be in attendance to answer questions on the subject and illustrate different techniques used in sword fencing.

There will be two main displays starting at 11 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.

For this occasion only there will be just one entrance fee to the fort at €8 per adult. Entrance will be free for children and all FWA members. No prior booking is necessary.
