I refer to the letter (April 22) by Brian Simmons in response to my previous letter.

I fully understand the difficulties experienced by pedestrians while attempting to walk along the café side of The Strand and can assure Mr Simmons that I do pass frequently through this pathway. To put things in their right perspective however, I would like to draw his attention to the fact that the council can only pile pressure on the relevant authorities to take the necessary enforcement and direct actions. A contract exists between the restaurant owner and a central authority over these tables and chairs where it is clearly stipulated that an adequate passageway should be left. Sliema local council has met with representatives from this authority in order to ascertain that the necessary action is taken from their end over this clear breach of contract.

The council has also been in close contact with the Malta Tourism Authority, Mepa and the Sliema police station over this issue.

I can assure Mr Simmons that the council will persevere to ensure that an adequate walkway is left for pedestrians at all times and that the necessary actions are taken by the relevant authorities.
