I would wish to assure Rodolfo Ragonesi I have not ignored the constitutional point raised in his letter ‘The people’s will’ (April 2).
I am not a constitutional lawyer or any sort of lawyer, for that matter, but I would believe that there were learned lawyers and judges around at the time who would have indicated that displaying the George Cross on the national flag needed the assent of Parliament.
On the other hand, the Maltese people would not have been in a position to display the award on our national flag without the permission of the king, which he graciously gave, to signify a unique (as in one-of-a-kind), well-deserved honour to the people of Malta.
