After the publication of my contribution, Let Us Attain Political Maturity (March 30), I was bombarded by friends, acquaintances and other well-wishers, as to why September 21, Independence, should not be our National Day. Why? Because on that day we still remained with the presence of Britain here and with certain matters and areas still under British control!

Ok! So let us suppose that a person is born with certain ailments and limitations, which require complicated medical and surgical interventions. The Maltese islands are well known for their expertise in the medical fields. Many surgeons, anaesthetists, dentists and others have made us proud in countries as far afield as Scotland, England and Canada! Therefore, thanks to our professionals, after 15 years of pains and sacrifices, this person regains great strength and becomes a normal human being.

Will the agonising days previous to attaining full recovery preclude this person from celebrating his/her date of birth?

Will this important date in one's life be exchanged for when the illnesses were overcome?

Not likely! Indeed, considering the quasi-martyrdom experienced, the birthday will gain an even greater meaning and dimension!
