To most of us the idea of a temporary position feels unsettling. Many believe temp jobs are for unskilled labour but there is a growing trend of ICT professionals who use project/contract work as a way to build a portfolio of skills and experiences pragmatically and strategically.

There are several some reasons why contract work maybe ideal for a new graduate.

The first is economic. We all graduate and think: "Finally, I won't be broke anymore, and I'm finally going to get the job I desire." At this point in life, money is important, but finding a job without experience is easier said than done. No matter how negative the attitude towards contracting, it is impossible to deny that they are often a good source of income. Contract work earns IT professionals a premium over the equivalent permanent position of some 30 per cent.

The second reason is that is helps you build your CV. If you are currently out of work, one reason could be that your resumé isn't looking too appealing to employers. When people are looking for permanent positions, they often concentrate on looking for it in as many places they can. Candidates should also try to strengthen their resumé. The perfect way to do this is by taking on contract work strategically to develop skills and build one's marketability and credentials in certain areas of skill.

A secret that many people don't realise is that a contracting job may be the most effective way into an organisation to show off your skills. If you are working with others or report to a manager, you are constantly being evaluated. People all around you are taking mental notes about your knowledge, skills, personality, friendliness, diligence, and behaviour. It sometimes happens that a contracting position turns into a position that needs to be filled permanently. Even if you are not openly told that your job is temp-to-hire, you might impress the right people and a permanent position could be offered.

Contract work gives you the opportunity to meet individuals in a particular sector. Therefore you are also networking with the people who can help you most in your career. A co-worker might someday be in a position to recommend you to fill a future position. Finally, contract work is temporary. This means that it gives a person much more flexibility than one would have in a permanent position. It gives you the opportunity to explore new fields and before committing fully to a specific career path within an area of expertise.

It is understandable that contract work may not be everyone's cup of tea, however ultimately taking on contract work provides numerous benefits and opportunities for a person with the right background, knowledge, and attitude.
