Rosette Thake is set to be the next Nationalist general secretary after it emerged she was the only executive member to enter the race during the nomination period which closed yesterday.

Her election along with that of the other members of the PN administration will be held on Wednesday during an executive committee meeting.

Mrs Thake’s nomination was no surprise, as she had been widely touted to succeed to outgoing general secretary Chris Said whose term expires at the end of this month. Dr Said had been asked by PN leader Simon Busuttil not to seek another two-year term, to focus on Gozo in an attempt to reverse a trend which saw the party lose ground to the Labour Party.

Though several Nationalist MPs had been linked with this post, Dr Busuttil had indicated he would like to see an individual outside the parliamentary group to be able to focus exclusively on the job.

Mrs Thake is a newcomer to politics and only rose to prominence last autumn when she chaired the first ever PN convention.

Meanwhile Jean Pierre Debono (assistant general secretary), Karol Aquilina (administrative council president), Anne Fenech (executive committee president), Alex Perici Calascione (treasurer) and Trevor Degiorgio (international secretary) were also uncontested.
