With the divorce referendum zero-hour fast approaching, Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, the Nationalist MP who sparked the whole process, admitted today that he had spent a 'sleepless night pacing on the terrace' last night.

Dr Pullicino Orlando started the process leading to the referendum when last July he presented a Bill for the introduction of divorce.

"We did our best with the limitations we had, we were fair and conducted a reasoned campaign, now it is up to the people," he told timesofmalta.com

Divorce Movement leader Deborah Schembri said she was satisfied with the turnout although she wished it was higher. She said the campaign had shown her how many people were suffering and that further strengthened her determination.

After so many intensive weeks of work, she said she was able to relax over the past hours and have a good night's sleep.

Arthur Galea Salomone, one of the spokesman for the anti-divorce movement, preferred not to discuss the referendum other than to say that his movement had done what it could.

He said he felt 'serene and tranquil' and had had a good night.

"We now just have to wait," he said.
