Mardy Fish exacted revenge for his U.S. Open meltdown against Tommy Robredo with a 6-1 6-2 6-3 victory over the 11th seed in the Australian Open second round on Wednesday.

Fish was leading 4-1 in the fifth set of their second-round match at Flushing Meadows last year but suffered the yips and was knocked out by the Spaniard.

"That was obviously a pretty devastating loss for me, being up 4-1 in the fifth," Fish told reporters. "(There were) a few spots there that I could have pulled out, could have pulled myself through and didn't. This was a pretty nice revenge." Fish said it was one of his best performances at a grand slam.

"This was definitely one of the best matches I've played ever," he added.

"Tommy makes you play a lot of balls (and) ...I just tried to shorten the points as much as I could. I was real successful doing that.".

The 26-year-old, whose best perforamnce at a grand slam was reaching the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park last year, meets Finland's Jarkko Nieminen in the third round, and a fourth-round showdown with good friend Andy Roddick is looming.

"My history is I've never played him (Nieminen) in a pro tournament. ...We've seen each other play quite a few times.

"Lefties are always difficult. He's going to make a lot of balls and I'm going to have to stay on top of him for sure.
