The Water Services Corporation has been ordered to pay over €5,000 in damages to home owners to make good for a sewage overflow into their house.

Michael and Grace Camilleri told the court that on October 27, 2004 following heavy rainfall, they realized that their lavatory was overflowing with sewage to the extent that there was over a metre of sewage water on their first floor.

As a result their floor tiles were ruined and had to be replaced.

According to the Camilleris, the overflow was caused by works carried out in the road on the sewage system by contractors appointed by the WSC. They requested the court to order the corporation to pay them damages.

Magistrate Paul Coppini in the Gozo courts heard testimony from WSC employees that the overflow was caused by a blockage in the road sewage system. The blockage was the result of faulty workmanship on the part of the contractors.

The court found in favour of the Camilleris and ordered WSC to pay them €5,641.73 in damages.
