Ten-man Tarxien Rainbows came back from a goal down to see off Naxxar Lions 3-1 in a Relegation Pool match this evening.

After a balanced first half it was Naxxar who took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Terrence Scerri was first to Filip Stojanovic’s cross from a corner-kick to direct the ball past Tarxien Rainbows goalkeeper Nicky Vella.

But the Rainbows took control of proceedings after the interval and they managed to draw level on 53 minutes.Jorge Santos Silva was the provider as his dipping cross found Demba Toure who anticipated his marker to stab the ball past Azzopardi.

Tarxien’s hopes suffered a blow on 67 minutes when they were reduced to ten men after Steve Bonnici was shown a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Andre Rocha Da Silva and was dismissed by referee Mario Apap. But despite being a man down, the Rainbows went on to clinch the winner four minutes from time.

The Rainbows were awarded a penalty after referee Apap pointed to the spot as he deemed that Angus Buhagiar had handled the ball in his own area in an attempt to block Lucas’s shot. From the resultant penalty Toure blasted the ball into the net to the delight of the Rainbows fans.

Tarxien striker Demba Toure was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
