Floriana booked their place in the semi-finals of the Anniversary Cup after they beat Hamrun Spartans 6-5 on penalties after the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Hamrun took the lead after 17 minutes when from a Clyde Camoin corner, Roderick Fenech’s header was deviated by Floriana defender Sacha Borg into his own net.

However, Floriana, grew in stature and Joseph Borg headed the equaliser on

25 minutes.

The goal galvanised the Greens who took the lead on 47 minutes with an excellent volley from Ryan Darmanin.

On 61 minutes, Floriana were reduced to ten men when Christian Caruana was sent off for second bookable offence.

Hamrun managed to save the match six minutes from time when Floriana’s Sacha Borg miscued his clearance with the ball hitting the upright and in came Fenech to nod the ball home.

With the match locked at 2-2 at full-time a penalty shoot-out was needed to declare a winner.

Here penalties were needed and Floriana prevailed 6-5 with Mead Mifsud, of Hamrun Spartans, missing the decisive penalty that settled the tie.
