A British teenager who crashed after she “borrowed” the car of her brother’s girlfriend without permission was fined €2,400 for driving without insurance cover.

Niamh Maria Murphy, 19, was also conditionally discharged for six months after she admitted to driving Josepha Tanti’s Diahatsu Sirion without permission and without insurance cover at about 3pm on Monday in Qawra.

She was also charged with driving recklessly and causing damage to thºe car. Ms Murphy said a car collided with hers while trying to overtake her.

Magistrate Carol Peralta gave her a year to settle the fine and, since she had to leave the island yesterday, Ms Tanti offered to act as a guarantor.

Police Inspector Maurice Curmi prosecuted.
