I am looking at a recent quote from a self-employed telephone technician: €45 + VAT = €53 per hour or part thereof, equivalent to $77.

"Take it or leave it," he told my client who had protested.

Over the festive season I stayed in a US household which needed the services of a central heating technician. The firm's charge was $37.50 (all inclusive) per half-hour, i.e. $75 for a full hour. And only if needed.

Can anyone really understand the workings of our economy? I don't.
