The Malta Union of Teachers have expressed themselves in favour of the introduction of tablets in schools provided certain conditions are met.

These include full IT support and a degree of flexibility on how to introduce the technology in class.

"Their introduction should be based on the model adopted for the introduction of whiteboards which was an overwhelming success," MUT Kevin Bonello said today.

On the other hand, he cautioned that the introduction of laptops had not been backed up with continuous hardware updates to the point that teachers were then ending up with faulty equipment for weeks if not months.

Mr Bonello was speaking during a news conference in which the union presented the findings of a survey on the tablet pilot project rolled out this year in a number of classes.

From this survey it transpired that nine out ten participants in the pilot project were looking forward for the introduction of this medium, but only 39 per cent said it had contributed to improve learning.

The findings of the survey will be communicated to the Education Ministry.
